Bargains to be found as Tampa Bay area Sweetbay stores become Winn-Dixie

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - If you shop at Sweetbay Supermarkets, change is coming.

It is the second time in seven years that some of these stores have made a transition.

In 2007, Kash N' Karry stores transitioned to become Sweetbay. The new identity was supposed to be more upscale.

In 2013, Bi-Lo Holdings purchased the Sweetbay Supermarket chain and will now transition 43 stores in the Tampa Bay area to become Winn Dixie stores.

Winn Dixie says they will be offering in store savings and rewards programs immediately.

Winn Dixie Vice president Joey Medina says while many things inside and outside the stores will be changing, they are also making an effort to keep things as familiar as possible inside the old Sweetbay stores.

"We made sure that we left items where they were at before, so if the peanut butter was on aisle 3, it's still going to be on aisle 3," said Medina.

Medina says many Sweetbay employees will also be staying and will receive new training and new purpose as Winn Dixie employees.

That's important for shoppers like Lizzie Rushing.

"I love Sweetbay and I'm glad they're keeping all of my friends in there,"said Rushing.

Sweetbay customers will also see immediate sales as the stores sells off its customized brands.

Hannaford products were the generic brand for Sweetbay and will now be sold as clearance items  as Winn Dixie moves to it's own branding.

Other Sweetbay lines like Nature's Place, my essentials and healthy accents will also be sold as clearance items as each Sweetbay stores closes.

A spokesperson says that the branded products will be marked down in increments, depending on when the Sweetbay store is scheduled to close.

The price cuts begin at 25 percent off, then products will be marked down 50 percent, followed by another mark down to 75 percent off.
