BRANDON FL (WFLA) -

Millions of people with heart burn eventually can't eat any foods, because the medicines to prevent acid reflux stop working.

"I couldn't lean down to get something out of the cabinet, because even that would trigger my acid reflux, I was in constant pain. It was miserable," said Diane Picket, who was desperate for a surgical solution.

Through research Diane Picket found Dr. Gopal Grandhige, a leading expert in the surgical treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

Dr. Grandhige is one of the few doctors in the state of Florida performing the a minimally invasive procedure to implant an FDA breakthrough medical device called LINX®, in those patients suffering with acid reflux, who no longer feel relief from over-the-counter or prescription drugs.

"It's laparoscopic, but the procedure heals pretty well, 30 minutes to an hour depending on a person’s surgical history. But we encourage them to start eating regular foods that night," Dr. Grandhige said.

LINX®, is a small flexible band of magnetic beads that is placed around the esophagus. The magnetic attraction helps the sphincter stay closed to prevent reflux.

After having the procedure, patient Diane Pickett, can eat whatever foods she wants, and is off medications related to acid reflux.

“It’s like I have my life back,” Pickett said.

Dr. Grandhige practices in Brandon with Suncoast Surgical Associates.
