How overweight is your county? Florida releases county health rankings

Posted: Updated:
The Florida Department of Health on Wednesday released comprehensive county health rankings called the "Florida Healthiest Weight Profiles."

The rankings are a snapshot of the health of Florida counties.

The rankings include the percentage of overweight, obese, underweight and healthy weight adults and middle-to-high-school-age children. They also list the percentage of people who live near healthy food sources, fast food restaurants and trail systems.

According to the 2014 Rankings, the five healthiest counties in Florida, starting with most healthy, are St. Johns County followed by Collier, Seminole, Martin and Miami-Dade. The five counties with the poorest health, starting with least healthy, are Union, Washington, Putnam, Baker and Hamilton.

Union County, home to Florida State Prison, the Union Correction Institution and the Florida Department of Corrections Reception and Medical Center has a disproportionately high premature death rate due to its large inmate population. A county’s mortality rate comprises 50 percent of its score.

The County Health Rankings were compiled by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI).
