Middleton student hit on East Hillsborough Avenue dies

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - A Middleton High School student involved in a pedestrian accident on East Hillsborough Avenue has died.

Norma Valesquez-Cabrera, 15, died Saturday at a local hospital, Tampa Police Department officials said.

Norma Velasquez-Cabrera and her 14-year-old sister, Victoria Velasquez-Cabrera, were both hit by a car while crossing the six-lane street east of North 22nd Street early Tuesday morning.

The girls left their apartment in the Meridian Pointe complex and were walking to Middleton High School, Tampa Police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said. As they tried to cross East Hillsborough Avenue, they were hit by a car at 7:15 a.m.

Norma was critically injured, Davis said. Victoria is recovering form her injuries.

The driver of the sedan is 17-year-old Deja Johnson, a student at Hillsborough High School. Police said the sisters were not at a crosswalk.

Johnson stopped immediately after the crash and Davis said it doesn't appear to be her fault. Johnson was not injured.

It is the same stretch of roadway that claimed the life of another Middleton High School student in October of 2011.

15-year old Shenika Davis was walking from her home to Middleton about 6:30 a.m. on international walk to school day when she crossed the street and was hit and killed by a pickup truck. The driver in that case was also not charged.
