MacDill official: suspect in custody after ramming base gate

Posted: Updated:
MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, (WFLA) -

MacDill Air Force Base officials say a man who rammed a car into a base gate is in custody.

A base spokesperson says a driver rammed the Dale Mabry Highway gate on Friday night, ditched the car nearby, and ran onto the base.

The base went onto lockdown during the search for the suspect. After less than an hour, MacDill officials and Tampa police officers located the man, and Tampa Police took him into custody.

No injuries have been reported.

The vehicle was recovered on the base. No motive has been released.

This all unfolded the night before MacDill Airfest is scheduled to begin. A base spokesperson told News Channel 8's Josh Thomas that this incident will not affect the event. Gates will open at 8:00 a.m. Saturday as scheduled.
