NC unemployment down from Jan. '13 to Jan. '14

Unemployment rates in North Carolina increased in 96counties from December to January, but unemployment overall is downsubstantially from a year ago, the North Carolina Department of Commerce saidin a news release.

Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) decreased inonly two counties and remained the same in two others. All 14 of the state'smetro areas had rate increases.

However, unemployment in the state is down substantiallysince January 2013, the Department of Commerce said.  Since January 2013, the number of workers employedstatewide  has increased 69,113, whilethose unemployed have decreased 122,254.

The Raleigh-Cary market saw unemployment from 8.0 percent inJanuary 2013 to 5.5 percent this January. Durham-Chapel Hill saw unemploymentdrop from 7.7 to 5.3. Fayetteville saw unemployment drop from 10.8 percent inJanuary 2013 to 7.9 percent in January 2014.

The Durham-Chapel Hill unemployment rate for January was thelowest i0n the state's metropolitan areas.

Rocky Mount continued to have severe unemployment, however.The metro area had an unemployment rate of 14.1 in January 2013, and it droppedto 10.3 in January 2014.
