POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

If you check the images on her Facebook page, Candace Patricia Hauser of Tampa appears to be a dog lover.

That's what makes the circumstances surrounding a felony animal cruelty charge against her even more baffling.

In a multi-agency investigation, police discovered a Polk County woman brought her pregnant mastiff to Hauser's home in early March after Hauser offered to assist with the delivery.

Several puppies were delivered but two became stuck. That's when authorities say Hauser cut the dog open to retrieve them.

The owner then brought the 70-pound mastiff to Winter Haven for care, but it was too late.

Dr. Loren Nations at Veterinary Healthcare Associates said what he saw on that dog looked nothing like a C-section, but more like stab wounds.

"It literally looked like they had taken a butcher's knife, had basically taken a stab into her abdominal cavity. They went through a mammary gland. It was very jagged. It looked like they had attempted to close her over with super glue,” Nations said.

Nations has images to back it up, but they are so graphic, News Channel 8 chose not to share them.

Learning the dog received no pain management through the process, he said, makes it even more disturbing.

"It's extremely unconscionable and whoever is responsible should go to jail,” Nations said.

The Hillsborough County Code Enforcement Director said following Hauser's arrest Saturday, the case is now in the hands of the State Attorney's Office.

At this point, the owner of the dog is not facing any charges. She is now caring for the surviving puppies.
