Firefighters got the fire under control by about 11 p.m. Tuesday
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -
A teenager was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries Tuesday night after a fire tore through her condo building in Tampa.
The first emergency calls started coming in from the Whisper Lake Condos on South Lake Dr. at 10:40 p.m. When firefighters arrived six minutes later, they found flames shooting through the roof of one of the three-story buildings.
A pizza delivery driver, on his way home from work, says he arrived before the first fire engines rolled up.
"I see black smoke and all that, so I started driving towards it," said Benjamin Beller. "It was massive... like 20, 30 feet of flames over the apartment complex."
It took nearly three dozen firefighters about 25 minutes to put it out, according to Hillsborough Fire Spokesperson Ronnie Rivera.
Six units have severe fire, smoke and water damage. The American Red Cross is now helping the 12 people who lived in those units with food, clothes, and hotel rooms.
A County Fire Investigator tells News Channel 8 the building is no longer stable. County Code Enforcement will be at the complex Wednesday morning to look at it before anyone will be allowed back inside. The cause of the fire has not been released.
