TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) -

The City of Tarpon Springs could pave the way for the largest and most technologically advanced indoor gun range in the southeastern United States.

European Equities, of Clearwater, wants to pump millions of dollars into a blighted piece of property on US 19 to make it a destination for gun enthusiasts.

Linda and Dick Kosloski can see the vacant Days Inn motel at the end of their street in the well manicured Stonehedge on the Hill mobile home community.

"It's definitely an eyesore and whatever they put in there is going to be for sure an improvement," said Linda Kosloski.

The dilapidated motel has sat vacant for a decade and has drawn lots of complaints from people who live and work around it.

"I'm sure there's people been living there that maybe shouldn't be," said Tarpon Springs Resident Susan Selby. "It's a little bit scary when you're out there walking your dog or walking up the highway."

By early next year, European Equities plans to tear the motel down to build the Reload Gun Range.

European Equities President David McComas says it would be nearly 60,000 square feet with 45 shooting lanes and a full tactical range for law enforcement. It would also have a cafe, classroom space, and 10,000 square foot store. A high-tech ventilation system will filter gun smoke from the air and automatic machines will collect bullet fragments for recycling, according to McComas.

Several Stonehedge residents told News Channel 8, as long it's soundproof, which McComas says it will be, they're all for it.

"I think it will be good. It's got to be an improvement," said Dick Kosloski.

The Tarpon Springs Planning and Zoning Board will vote on the project Monday at 7 p.m. It will move on to the City Commission for a final vote April 15. The developer has also scheduled a meeting with nearby residents next week.
