DUNEDIN, FL (WFLA) -

The recovery of a spunky beagle, who was near death at the time of his rescue, was celebrated at the Suncoast Animal League’s 8th Annual Mutt Madness festival on Saturday.

“Hydro” won the hearts of local animal lovers who went out of their way to save him. The beagle was severely injured when he was hit by a car near Sebring in early January.

Volunteers with Palm Harbor’s non-profit Suncoast Animal League picked up Hydro and drove him to Pinellas County. He was in such bad shape, they pulled over twice to see if he was still breathing.

Veterinarians opted to try to save Hydro’s badly broken leg, rather than amputate it. They also treated him for road rash, scrapes, broken teeth and liver problems.

Hydro continued his recovery at the home of Suncoast Animal League President Rick Chaboudy, who chronicled the beagle’s progress on the organization’s Facebook page. Soon, Hydro had an online following of supporters, some of whom made donations and attended a fundraiser to help pay Hydro’s $3,000 medical bill.

At Saturday’s Mutt Madness festival in Dunedin, attendees cheered as Hydro made his way on stage and Chaboudy announced that he had been adopted and his entire medical bill had been paid by donations.

The festival attracted thousands of people, many brought their dogs who were dressed in green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Nearly 30 rescue groups participated in the event, along with pet vendors.

Pets and their owners also competed in “Dancing with the Paws,” “Fido Idol” and pet look-a-like contests. K9 artist “Brody” used his teeth to hold a paintbrush and created a colorful painting which was then auctioned off.

The Suncoast Animal League is located at 1030 Pennsylvania Ave. in Palm Harbor (727) 786-1330.

It sounds like a wild fabrication: A spitting cobra, being prepared for a dish in a restaurant in southern China, bit and killed a chef 20 minutes after its head had been chopped off.

The may look fluffy and cute, but these caterpillars are anything but. Under all that fur on the puss caterpillar are venomous bristles that break off into the skin when touched by humans and cause serious pain.
