MIAMI, FL (WFLA) - Spring marks horseshoe crabs' mating season and wildlife officials are asking for help in identifying spawning sites.

A statement by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says beachgoers can spot mating horseshoe crabs around high tide, just before, during or after a new or full moon. The conditions around the full moon this Sunday and the new moon on March 30th will be ideal.

Spotters are asked to take note of how many crabs they see and to provide the date, time, location, habitat type and environmental conditions - such as tides and moon phase.

Reports can be made online by visiting the commission's website, by email at horseshoeMyFWC.com or by calling 866-252-9326.

The survey program began in 2002 and last year brought in over 2,800 reports.
