Sheriff: Sarasota man strikes deputy with car, speeds off

Posted: Updated:
SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - A Sarasota County man has been accused of beating a man and striking a deputy with his car before crashing into trees all while under the influence on Siesta Key last week.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested 23-year-old Stephen Testa of Venice late Thursday from Blake Medical Center where he was treated for the injuries he sustained in the crash.

On March 6th, deputies say Testa was involved in a fight that left a man unconscious. While investigating, they say Testa accelerated his vehicle toward a deputy, striking him and knocking him onto the hood. The deputy was thrown to the pavement from the vehicle when Testa jerked the wheel of his car, nearly striking another deputy. Testa sped off and crashed into several trees on Beach Road.

A toxicology report showed there was PCP, marijuana and alcohol in his system.

He is charged with Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. The crash remains under investigation by Florida Highway Patrol and additional charges are pending.
