The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is investigating a skimmer case that spreads through five counties.

They say the skimming case spreads through Inlays, Pasco, Polk, Hernando, Hillsborough counties. The incidents have occurred at only Hess Gas Stations, detectives say, using internal skimmers so the consumers have no idea they are getting ripped off.

Pasco County investigators say at least 337 credit cards have been compromised in Wesley Chapel.

Pastor Wayne Irons of the Abiding Faith Church in Tampa, believes he is a victim. He buys gas at that station at least once a day. He says somebody took his credit card information and made $300 in purchases. "They went to the Publix, they went to the Sweetbay, they went back to the Publix, all in a 30 minute time frame" said Pastor Irons.

Detectives say, customers could be victims, and not even know it, until the bill comes in. "this is the kind of scam that's difficult to protect yourself from because you can't tell if the machine has been tampered with at all. There's no way. So, the only way to be certain is to go inside the store and run your card there and tell them what pump you're gonna be on" said Detective Bruce Cohen of the Pasco Sheriff's office.

The Sheriff's Office would like people to check their card statements for fraudulent charges or if they purchased fuel in the past several days from the Hess Gas Station at 28232 SR 54 in Wesley Chapel. Investigators believe the cards would have been compromised either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday of last week. The skimmer was taken off pump #3 and pump #20 on Saturday.

Detectives believe this case could be related to the Brooksville skimmer case. The Sheriff's Office is working with the Secret Service on the investigation.

They say the best way to protect yourself is to pay for gas inside.

Anyone with information on the skimming is asked to call the PSO at 727-844-7711 with information or click the TIPS tab on the Pasco Sheriff's website.
