Baby stops breathing, prompts Tampa US Airways flight to divert

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON, TX (WFLA) - Andy Russick was on a flight to Phoenix Tuesday when a man rushed up from the back of the plane and put a baby boy down next him.

The infant apparently had a seizure and the man was trying to save his life, Russick said. The medical emergency prompted the pilot on US Airways flight 678 to make an emergency landing around 6:44 p.m.

"It looked like the baby had a seizure and there was a man in back who must have been a combat paramedic or something who rescued the baby," said Russick.

"The baby wasn't breathing when it came by me," Russick told CNN affiliate KIVK.Then a man seated near Russick climbed over him to join the first man. He was a doctor, Russick said.

Together the two men worked on the baby, one of them performing what looked like CPR, Russick said.

It worked.

When the baby let out a wail, one of the men cheered.

"He yelled something out like, 'a crying baby is a breathing baby,'" Russick said.

The plane, which had originated in Tampa, Florida, diverted to Houston for the medical emergency, said US Airways spokeswoman Liz Landau. It then continued on to Phoenix.

After the doctor sat back down, he told Russick that the baby had a very high fever, which may have had something to do with the attack.

The dramatic incident unfolded on Twitter. US Airways sent the following tweet, "the flight was diverted due to a medical emergency on board and continued on to PHX landing shortly before 9 p.m.

A passenger on the plane tweeted about the experience. Barb Miltner, of Glendale, AZ sent the following tweets as the emergency unfolded.

"I am flying!" she tweeted at about 8 p.m. Tuesday and included a photo of clouds as seen from her window on the plane.

Then, a short time later, Miltner tweeted, "Flying from Tampa to Phoenix.... Emergency on board.. Someone is sick! @US Airways."

She then tweeted, "Emergency landing, flight from Tampa to Phoenix!!! Us airways."

Three hours later Miltner sent the following tweet, "two medics and a nurse save baby on my flight from Tampa to Phoenix, emergency landing in Houston... Off to Phoenix now."

Miltner followed up with tweets Wednesday, "I was on the flight! Amazing job by 2 paramedics and one nurse!!!" and "Glad the baby survived!! I was in first class and don't know all the real facts! Just remembered how glad we all were when it cried!"
