Alex Sink falls short in District 13 race

Posted: Updated:

The watch party for Democrat Alex Sink was over before it got started.

About 200 campaign workers and volunteers arrived at 7:30 p.m., and by 7:40, the unofficial results showed Republican David Jolly was the victor in the race for the District 13 Congressional seat.

Sink entered the ballroom at the Carillon Hilton Hotel in Clearwater and went straight to the podium. With her children by her side she gave a brief concession speech.

"Obviously you've heard the results and it was not the results any of us wanted. I have spoken to David Jolly and congratulated him on a hard fought campaign," said Sink.

She thanked the 2,000 volunteers she said had knocked on 150,000 doors and made 500,000 phone calls on her behalf.

One campaign volunteer, Diego Navaes, was disappointed Sink lost by little more than 3,400 votes.

"I think we live in a country that says we want moderates and when moderates run this is what happens people don't show up, people don't vote," said Navaes.

Sink did not stay at her campaign party. She also did not talk about any other campaigns in her future.
