McCrory seeking records for Duke Energy on coal ash

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory plans to make public Duke Energy'srecords involving the spill that dumped millions of gallons of coal ash intothe Dan River last month, he said Tuesday.

McCrory said he and his lawyer hope to release Duke Energy's records as soon as they get them, which could be as soon as nextweek.

McCrory asked for the records from Duke Energy, his former employer,  in a recent letter to the company.

After the Council of State meeting Tuesday morning, McCrory told reporters he is being extremely transparent about the situationinvolving Duke Energy.

Duke Energy is under fire after an estimated 35 milliongallons of contaminated water containing coal ash spilled into the Dan River in February. That's enough to fill 53 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The governor also addressed concerns that a lack of oversight dueto budget cuts contributed to the problem.

"I think that whole issue needs to be reviewed, andwe will review it, but the fact of the matter is many of these instances andlack of oversight occurred long before the staff reductions and budgetreductions [under the Gov. Bev Perdue administration," he said.

As for who should pay for the cleanup, McCrory said politicsshould be left out of it, and it should be worked out through the Utilities Commission.
