New program to curb prostitution in Sarasota

Posted: Updated:
SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) - Sarasota Police are launching a new program aimed at trying to curb prostitution in the city, police officials announced Thursday.

Starting March 4, every driver of a registered vehicle spotted in an area known for prostitution-related crimes, will receive a letter from the department stating that the vehicle was observed in that area.

The letter will have a case number generated by the documentation procedure and the contact information for Sergeant Demetri Konstantopoulos with the Sarasota Police Department Street Crimes Unit.

The letter is for advisory purposes only, and doesn't accuse anybody of any crimes, police said. It doesn't mean that any charges are pending against the drivers. Officers hope this will be just another helpful tool to fight street crimes.

The Sarasota Police Department is taking a No Tolerance' stance on prostitution, police officials said. They will continue working together with the community to revitalize the North Trail.

This follows an 8 On Your Side investigation that showed that Glenn Jasen, the former homeowner, cashed a check from Citizens Property Insurance for $153,745 in January 2009. But he didn't use the money to fix the sinkhole. Instead, Jasen sold the home to Kelly Magbee's family in March. The Magbees moved in with their five ch...
