Homicide victims in Durham from 2013 honored

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

This will be the 22nd year The Religious Coalition for a Non-Violent Durham honors victims of violence Tuesday in the Bull City.

The ceremony honored 32 names and one of them, was Jennifer Williams son.

"He is the youngest on this list", said Williams.

She said her teenage son was senselessly murdered in July.

"Dion, I love you, and I'm going to do everything that I can to make sure your death was not in vain. There are too many of our teenagers dying and it's unnecessary," Williams said of her son.

More than a hundred people gathered in solidarity for those victims at the Shepherd's House United Methodist Church, singing hymns and praying together.

For Yolanda Bagley, seeing other mothers and fathers who lost their children to violence helped bring some closure.

"I never thought that I would have a child that I would lose," said Bagley.

She lost her son in November 2012 and hasn't been the same since.

Supporters hope this year's vigil shows their loved ones are not just statistics but someone they loved and perhaps a death that could've been avoided.

"You feel like you're all by yourself sometimes but you're not. There are other people that are going through the same thing," said Lillie Rogers.

Rogers lost her granddaughter in 2005 in Durham.

So far this year there have been five reported homicides in Durham. On March 6, Durham's chief of police will be presenting the 2013 annual crime report.

Durham police said there were 30 criminal homicides reported in 2013 with two addition cases hat were ruled as self-defense.
