ALABASTER, AL - A woman has been arrested after a baby died inside a burning car after a one-vehicle accident.

The Alabaster Police Department was called to the scene Friday morning at Highway 119 and Kent Dairy Road.

Officers said when they arrived, they found Sommer Nicole Wilford, 22,  standing outside of a burning vehicle.

Once the flames were extinguished, the baby’s body was discovered inside.

Investigators say they believe the baby was Wilford’s 19 month old son.

Wilford has been charged with reckless murder and booked in the Shelby County Jail on a $300,000 bond.

“We are all saddened by the senseless death of this child and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” said Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney.

Police have not released any details surrounding the crash. They say the investigation is ongoing.
