SEFFNER, FL (WFLA) -

Today marks a somber anniversary in Seffner.

It's been one year since a massive sinkhole swallowed and killed 37-year-old Jeffrey Bush as he slept in a bedroom at 240 Faithway Dr.

"It seems like it was a dream that I had last night," said Janell Wicker Wheeler, who had lived in the home for 40 years. "It just doesn't seem real."

Wheeler was in the bedroom next to Bush's and heard the pit take down the floor. She decided to rest and give her dog attention instead of putting the laundry up she had just washed. That decision probably saved her life, she said.

"I would've been standing in front of the closet when it opened up," she said. "It makes me - every day - thank God that he's letting me see my grandchildren grow up and letting me see my sons and letting me see my family. And giving me the opportunity to tell them I love them every time I can."

Crews demolished the home not long after it happened and rescue teams were never able to retrieve Bush's body. The "catastrophic collapse," as officials call it, likely caused a hole more than 60 feet deep.

Hillsborough County is still in the process of acquiring the land. Administrators are proposing to restore the land back to the community with "a conservation-like, maintenance-free approach." They envision safety fencing, trees and shrubbery, and a small memorial to honor Bush.

In the meantime, family and friends are planning a candlelight memorial Friday evening.
