A Kinston man is behind bars accused of breaking into a home.

Deputies in Lenoir County say early Wednesday morning Leon Brown of Opal Lane in Kinston contacted the 911 center to report that he had just arrived home to find two people fleeing from his home.

Deputies say the 911 call was received at 12:58 a.m.  Deputies responded to the home located in Green Acres Mobile Home park and searched the area.  Major Ryan Dawson responded to the scene also and was able to locate a suspect walking through the park.

The suspect, Chandler Smith, age 19, was taken into custody and questioned.  Smith eventually confessed to his part of the burglary.  It was also determined that Smith had been in possession of a BB pistol that closely resembled a .357 handgun.  Smith discarded the BB pistol while fleeing from the home.  Smith’s vehicle was also found parked a few blocks from the victim’s home.

When the vehicle was searched it contained items taken from Brown’s home.  The other suspect who had fled the home is still being sought but investigators are working strong leads and an arrest should occur within the next few days.

An examination of the home by Det. Andre Barrett indicated that the home was forcefully entered through the front door by kicking it in. Deputies say the suspects ransacked the home taking numerous items such as DVD players, ammunition, rifle, DVD’s, etc.  In all, total 17 items were taken.

“The quick actions of the home owner calling 911 and my officers rapidly converging on the area allowed us to partially bring this case to a close and make an arrest.” Said Sheriff Chris Hill.

Chandler Smith is charged with:

Second Degree Burglary
Conspiracy to commit Burglary
Larceny after Breaking and Entering
Possession of Stolen Goods

His bond was set at $251,000.
