KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) - One day after Kingsport Police arrested a man for an unsolved murder that happened two years ago the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office told News Channel 11 that same suspect has not been ruled out in connection to an unsolved murder in the county that happened in 2010.

Wednesday, Kingsport Police announced Jonathan Lynn Slemp was indicted for the 2011 murder of Betty Sue Short. Last year, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office said they suspected the man who killed Betty Sue Short could be connected to another unsolved murder, the death of Gary Jones in 2010.

Thursday, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office said Slemp was not ruled out as a possible suspect in Jones' murder.

"We know that Mr. Slemp and Gary Jones were acquaintances. And knew each other and that Slemp had gone to Mr. Jones house several times as a friend," said Lieutenant Bobby Russell.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office ruled out Slemp's involvement in the 1997 unsolved murder of 17-year- old James Hutson. Lieutenant Russell said investigators just recently received a second analysis of DNA in the case. He said it eliminated Slemp as a suspect in Hutson's and did not point to any new leads.

Investigators continue to ask for any tips in the Hutson and Jones murder cases.

Kingsport police arrest city man in 2011 murder of Betty Sue Short

Kingsport Police arrested a city man in the 2011 murder of Betty Sue Short. During a press conference Wednesday, the police department announced they arrested Kingsport resident Jonathan Lynn Slemp, 42, 241 Chesterfield Drive, as a suspect in Short's death.

Slemp was charged with first-degree murder, felony murder and especially aggravated robbery.

On October 16th 2011, Short was found beaten to death in her apartment at 361 Barnett Street.

"The initial assessment revealed that Mrs. Short had been beaten to death in an extremely violent manner by an unknown assailant," according to the police news release.

Police said Short knew Slemp. They said he killed her and stole items from her home.

The arrest follows years of investigative work by Kingsport Police Sgt. Frank Light and Detective Randy Murray along with the entire Criminal Investigative Division who, police said, "utilized good old fashioned police work to relentlessly seek out the culprit of this crime."

In a Monday's Most Wanted report in March 2013, News Channel 11 reported that police suspected Short's killer could be connected to two other unsolved murder cases in Sullivan County. On Wednesday, a Sheriff's office spokesperson said Slemp had not been named as a suspect in any murder except Short's.

Sullivan County Sheriff's Office has also reportedly arrested Slemp in the past for a DUI and evading arrest.
