ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

A St. Petersburg company is offering its customers a groovy way to experience the sunshine state.

Instead of offering traditional RVs for vacationers to rent, Florida Oldscool Campers rents vintage Volkswagen buses.

Owners Dixie Phillips, 44, and Mike Ponnath, 39, started the business after realizing how much fun they had in Mike's old VW bus.

"We just loved it," said Phillips.

Oldscool Campers has a fleet of five lovingly-restored buses that include retro decor, a gas stove, a sink with water tank, a table, a couch that turns into a bed, linen, and space to store your stuff.

The couple, who lives in St. Pete, kept with the hippie theme of the 1970s and gave the campers names from the era, "Jasmine," "Autumn," "Krazy Karl," "Joy," and "Skylar".

Most of the campers have two double beds, so if you have a Partridge or Brady Bunch sized family, you might want to consider renting more than one camper.

The decor may be old school, but the sound system in the VW buses is not, so leave your old 8-track and cassette tapes at home.

Phillips says the cool campers are often rented by people who appreciate nature and prefer to explore Florida campgrounds, beaches, parks and trails instead of visiting theme parks.

Their customers come from all walks of life.

"We get a lot of engineers, a lot of Harley riders, parents and old hippies that used to own buses themselves," she said.

Camping is not the only activity the VW buses are used for. One of the buses, "Autumn" starred in a print ad and TV commercial for Bealls department store. The buses have also appeared in wedding photos.

Rental prices start at $300 for three days and two nights.
