CITRUS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - A former contest on American Idol, Dave Pittman, is stopping by schools in Citrus County this week to deliver an anti-bullying message.

Dave has battled Tourette Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is sharing the message of overcoming adversity with students alongside Sheriff Dawsy and Superintendent Sam Himmel.

As a young boy, Dave was bullied, made fun of, and even physically beaten up because of tics caused by Tourette Syndrome to the point where he was prepared to take his own life.

He told his story to students at Lecanto Middle School in Citrus County on Wednesday so they will know what really matters is what you think of yourself.

"It's important for them to understand and for them to see that you can be okay with who you are and be okay building that good character," Pittman said. "Good character is who you are when no one else is around."

Pittman was a finalist on Season 9 of American Idol and now tours the country sharing his story. The Citrus County Sheriff's Office sponsored the event as part of their effort to bring attention to bullying and the consequences of being a bully.

In addition to addressing bullying, Pittman also performed several songs from American Idol to the delight of the middle school students

Following his visits at local schools, he will attend a charity golf event on Saturday at the Plantation in Crystal River.

The schedule of visits is as follows:

Wednesday

10 a.m. Inverness Middle School
1 p.m. Lecanto Middle School

Thursday

8 a.m. Crystal River High School
10 a.m. Citrus High School
1:30 p.m. Crystal River Middle School
