Mikel Brady sentenced to 40 years on federal gun charge

The man who shot a North Carolina State trooper multiple times in Durham Feb. 18, 2013 was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to a federal charge.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Mikel Edward Brady, 23, of Durham, was serve 40 years in prison followed by five years of supervised released for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Potts was performing a routine traffic stop on Feb. 18, 2013 when he was shot five times by Brady. Potts was shot twice in the head, once in the shoulder and a couple times in the hands.

Brady was arrested a day after the shooting.

Brady is already serving a state court sentence of more than 24 years for shooting Trooper Potts with the firearm Brady possessed illegally.
