Search for person accused of hitting Tampa bus with rocks

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Maria Boza catches the number six Hart bus on a regular basis and says she can't understand why someone would be throwing rocks at buses, especially while passengers are inside.

"It is unthinkable to me. I can't imagine the thought process going through someone’s head to do that,” said Boza.

Surveillance video from inside one bus shows flying glass the moment one of the rocks makes impact with a window.

Hart officials are now trying to figure out who is behind the rock throwing and why.

"Hart is here to provide a service and be a community partner,” Sandra Morrison, with Hart, said. “We are providing a service to get patrons and riders to where they need to go, so why would you try to put someone's life in danger?"

In the past three weeks, there have been eight reported incidents of someone throwing rocks as the buses travel along Melburne Boulevard in Tampa, causing some frightening moments for targeted riders.

"You see the reaction of the patrons and our riders, and it is hard to believe someone or a group of people would throw rocks at a bus filled with people,” Morrison added. “And that they know they could hurt somebody.”

There are still remnants of the rocks scattered in the road.

Fortunately, no one has been hurt in any of the incidents, but the potential is there, causing Hart to change to route one day for the number six bus to avoid the area.

"If the bus system has to move routes, or change things up, that's difficult for me because it took a while to learn to begin with, and I come from a long way so this is vital to what I am doing right now,” Boza went on to say. “It would be a great interruption in my life to learn new routes."

For now, Hart is working with Tampa Police to try and track down the person(s) responsible for pelting buses with rocks.
