LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

Nearly 75 cats rescued from a Hernando County hoarding case are now safe in Lakeland at the SPCA Florida. Veterinarians and medical workers there are pleasantly surprised at the minimal health issues they battle, considering the deplorable conditions in which they were living.

“When you're smelling the house and your eyes are burning and you're pulling everything together there's nothing that compares over to it,” SPCA Florida’s Veterinarian Kim Domokos said.

Cats were still coming in to the facility Tuesday, totaling 73 by day’s end. It's the new, temporary house that kind of fits the name of their favorite feline.

“This is Heaven,” Domokos said of the first cat that was named.

Multiple staffers are carrying the load that comes with this case.

“We are testing them to make sure they don't have feline leukemia or feline aids, we will de-worm them... kill any fleas that are on them, as well as putting them into our software program for tracking purposes.

And what's just as shocking how the cats were living, is how their health stayed so strong.

“That's just astonishing for how bad the breathing conditions were,” Domokos said. “Usually when you have conditions that bad you have upper respiratory issues being passed around as far as breathing and sneezing and really we can count on our hands the amount of cats we've taken in that have those problems.”

It’s a relief to rescue workers that restores the fun in what they do and gives the cats hope for better days.

If you’re interested in adopting one of the cats, drop by the SPCA Florida in Lakeland. They’re located on Brannen Road South. Adoption hours are Tuesday-Friday 11-7, Saturday & Sunday 10-5.
