Cantor raises money for Rouzer in NC Congress race

WILMINGTON, N.C. -

U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has injected himself into the May Republican primary for an eastern North Carolina congressional district.

Cantor has picked former state Sen. David Rouzer over New Hanover County commissioner Chairman Woody White.

The Virginia Republican helped raise money for Rouzer on Monday. The two held a news conference before a Wilmington event. Cantor says Rouzer's candidacy is a priority of the GOP leadership and called Rouzer a "common-sense conservative."

White called Rouzer on Monday a Washington insider and criticized Cantor's vote last week to raise the debt limit ceiling. Rouzer has worked as a federal lobbyist. Rouzer says he has the experience to get things done in Washington.

Rouzer narrowly lost in 2012 to Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre, who is not seeking re-election this year.
