NC State coliseum packed with fans honoring Kay Yow

Posted: Updated:

NC State's Reynolds Coliseum was packed Sunday, many in symbolic pink.

The "Play 4 Kay" campaign has been a nationwide push, getting schools to dedicate at least one sporting event to raise funds for women's cancer research and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Sunday was the NC State "Hoops 4 Hope" game---bringing together breast cancer survivors, coaches, student-athletes and supporters on Yow's home court.

This year featured the women's basketball matchup between State and UNC. North Carolina ending up beating State 89-82. However, spirits were high none the less.

"We are giving a flower to all the survivors," said a sorority girl handing out pink flowers.

It meant a lot to survivors like Angela Harris.

"I am thrilled to be here supporting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The work they are doing to support research and access for uninsured women is so important," Harris said.

Kay Yow was the legendary head coach of the NC state women's basketball team from 1975 to 2009. She died from stage 4 breasts cancer.

People Sunday were keeping her legacy alive.

"Its a celebration of Coach Yow and all of her fellow survivors, and it's a celebration of all she meant to NC State," said Kay Yow Cancer Fund Executive Director Sue Donohoe.
