'Growler' bill could change Fla. beer container sizes

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Beer sellers and drinkers could be saying "cheers" soon if a new growler bill is passed this year.

A growler is a 64-ounce container that is currently prohibited in Florida.  Other sizes, like 32 ounces and a gallon plus, are legal.  Supporters of the growler bill says the current law against 64-ounce containers hurts breweries in the state, because the growler is the standard container almost everywhere else in the country.

"Ultimately it's hurting the consumer because they've traveled to 47 other states and bought a 64 ounce growler that is useless unless they keep changing it in Florida because none of the brewers can fill it," said Justin Clark of Cigar City Brewing.

The law would only affect purchases of beverages that are being taken home.  It would not affect bar sales.
