Young girl perishes in Ruskin fire; five others injured

RUSKIN, FL (WFLA) - Neighbors of a four-year-old girl who died in a Ruskin fire Friday night said they did everything they could to try and rescue her.

“When I went in the first time the, fire and smoke kicked me back out. So I went in there again and I made it to the entrance of the door. It was too much I couldn't see any surroundings in there,” said Ray Zuniga.

The mobile home was at 425 18th Street in the Wolfs Mobile Home Park in Ruskin. They found the body the four-year-old, who family has identified as Alejandra Camona. Her father was injured in the flames and had to be airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Another adult and three kids made it out the home and were taken to the hospital.

“I told the father, I apologized to him I told him I was sorry, I tried my best,” said Zuniga.

“They encountered some power lines that were down, so they could only work on one side of the mobile home until TECO arrived on scene to shut down the power,” said Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Chip Shields.

Alejandra’s grandmother, Irene Valdez said she was looking for answers Saturday night.

“I want to find out what happened,” said Irene Valdez.

“They could hear her scream and cry and she was burning. She was dying. I was hoping she wouldn't suffer like that,” said Valdez.

HCFR has not released the cause of the fire.
