POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Thursday Governor Rick Scott awarded Polk County firefighter Jordan Caldwell, 25, the Medal of Heroism for saving a Mulberry woman from her burning home in June.

In the early morning of June 14th, 2013, Firefighter Caldwell, along with his partner, responded to a residential fire and discovered a wood framed house surrounded by heavy smoke.

Upon arrival, a neighbor told them that Sherri Stewart was trapped by the fire inside the home. Firefighter Caldwell immediately entered the burning home without the protection of a hoseline, and began searching for Ms. Stewart. While being blinded by the smoke, Firefighter Caldwell was able to find Ms. Stewart and pull her away from the fire. Firefighter Caldwell provided medical assistance to resuscitate Sherri from her smoke inhalation while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Governor Scott said, “I am honored to recognize Polk County Fire Rescue Firefighter Jordan Caldwell for going above and beyond the call of duty to save the life of a fellow Floridian in Polk County. Firefighter Caldwell’s quick thinking and bravery helped save Ms. Stewart’s life and prevented others from being injured. Florida’s first responders, like Firefighter Caldwell, put their lives on the line to keep others safe.”

"I was just doing my job," Caldwell said.

Caldwell was humble about the honor Thursday but Governor Scott said he deserves praise.

"He put his life at risk," Scott said. "He didn't know if he was going to come out of that house alive. He's willing to put his life at risk to save someone else's life," he said.

Caldwell has been with the department five years.

The “Medal of Heroism” is given to any law enforcement or correctional officer, firefighter, emergency medical technician or paramedic who has distinguished himself or herself by risking his or her life deliberately above and beyond the call of duty and must have engaged in hazardous or perilous activities to preserve lives with the knowledge that such activities might result in great personal harm.
