LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) - Hurricane season is less than four months away. Wednesday 40 businesses will attend a workshop on preparing a business recovery plan in the event of a hurricane.

"As a business owner if you don't sit down and plan today for a catastrophic situation, you probably won't resume your business," said Patrick McKillop, Vice President of Critical Records Management.

The workshop will be held at the SmartDome. The dome was built along Interstate 4 near Lakeland about 18 months ago.  The SmartDome is the first of its kind, meant to hold critical business data and information and withstand 300 miles per hour wind.

"We have people who are bringing in their most critical information whether it be medical information or vital back-up to resume business," said McKillop. "Even supply chain management items that have to be there. This facility this park of domes can handle all of that," McKillop continued.

McKillop also offers business owners a few tips to think about before hurricane season. Make a business continuity and recovery plan.  Know what documents are needed to get your business back up and running, and find a way to secure them. Set up a data back-up system based on how much data you can afford to lose if a disaster strikes.

Some statistics show that after a disaster, less than 10 percent of businesses without a disaster recovery plan survive.
