TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

If you have pets, you're probably very aware of how much mischief they can get in to.

That's what happened when the antics of a playful Tampa cat resulted in emergency surgery for the household's dog.

Pet owner Andrea Hearn thought she kept her hair bands stored in a safe place on the bathroom counter top.

But the Hearn’s curious cat Cadence got into the hair bands.

Then, Lucy, a 2-year-old Boston terrier who also lives in the home, ate 27 of the hair bands.

Lucy started vomiting and then became lethargic.

The Hearns contacted their veterinarian who took x-rays and discovered the undigested hair-bands in Lucy’s stomach and small intestines.

Lucy underwent emergency surgery at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa. Dr. Nicole Salas, removed the hair bands during a the surgery which was an hour-and-a-half long.

“It’s not uncommon to see dogs get into things they’re not supposed to,” said Salas.

“Unfortunately, this one led to surgery, but at least the Hearns will have an amusing story to tell and hopefully it will serve as a warning to others to make sure their home is pet-proofed for all of the pets they may have.”

Lucy is expected to make a full recovery.
