WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) - Detectives with the Winter Haven Police Department are seeking the public’s help in tracking down one or more suspects that vandalized a baseball diamond at the Chain of Lakes Complex.

On Saturday crews working at the facility discovered the damage in the right-center field portion of the field. When the workers left the complex Friday night at 6 p.m. the field was fine.

According to a Winter Haven Police Department report the vandalism occurred during the overnight hours. Investigators believe the suspects drove a ‘utility-type’ vehicle onto the diamond causing the damage.

The complex – which once served as the Spring Training home for the Boston Red Sox – is scheduled to host the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational later this month. WHPD Chief Gary Hester is not happy about the crime.

“Our city takes great care in preparing the fields to host the RussMatt events,” Hester said. “Someone may have thought this was funny, but this type of blatant disregard for city property will not be taken lightly.”

If you have any information about the incident contact the Winter Haven Police Department at 863-401-2256. If you wish to remain anonymous call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-8477.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
