2014 Florida State Fair features largest traveling roller coaster, admission discounts

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

This year, the Florida State Fair will offer 110 free things to do to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the fair.

The fair opens Thursday, Feb. 6 with "Heroes Day". All active, reserve, former or retired Military Veterans, Law Enforcement, Firemen, and First Responders will be admitted free with valid identification.

There will be other special discounts during the fair, which continues through Monday, Feb. 17.

The Florida State Fair is the first state fair in the nation.

This year's fair will feature North America's largest traveling roller coaster, along with many other rides.

Fair-goers will be able to see animals and livestock and bizarre side-shows like sword swallowing and fire eating. A FMX Motorcycle Thrill Zone will entertain thrill seekers.

Of course, the fair always has a wide variety of foods to choose from, for those who want to grab a bite to eat.

For those who like live music, headliners for the fair's four featured concerts include America, Country Gold, Sister Hazel and Uncle Kracker.

Adult regular admission is $11 Mon-Fri and $13 Sat-Sun. Children (ages 6 to 11) regular admission is $6 Mon-Fri and $6 Sat-Sun. Kids ages 5 and under are free.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Florida State Fair website and at Walgreen's stores.

Here's the schedule for discounted admission and other fair discounts-

  • Friday, Feb. 7: Student Day. Students at Hillsborough County Schools receive free admission, tickets distributed at schools.
  • Saturday, Feb. 8: 4-H & FFA Day, Free admission for 4-H & FFA members with member identification or jacket.
  • Sunday, Feb. 9: Student Day. Students at Hardee County Schools receive free admission, tickets distributed at schools.
  • Monday, Feb. 10: Senior Day. Ages 55+ pay $9 admission at the gate. $5 admission after 5 p.m. Taste of the Fair Day, smaller portions for a smaller price.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 11: Senior Day. Ages 55+ pay $9 admission at the gate. $5 admission after 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 12: Senior Day. Ages 55+ pay $9 admission at the gate. Midweek Midway Madness, ride armband cost, $15 at 3 p.m., sold only at the fairgrounds.
  • Thursday, Feb. 13: Senior Day. Ages 55+ pay $9 admission at the gate. College Day, ride armband costs $20 at 3 p.m. Sold only at the fairgrounds.
  • Friday, Feb. 14: No admission discount, but couples can register to win a free cruise for two. Drawing will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Expo Hall.
  • Saturday, Feb. 15: 4-H & FFA Day, Free admission for 4-H & FFA members with member identification or jacket.
  • Sunday, Feb. 16: Student Day. Students at Citrus, Highlands and Marion County Schools receive free admission, tickets distributed at schools.
  • Monday. Feb. 17: Student Day. Students at Manatee, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota County Schools receive free admission, tickets distributed at schools. Family Fun Day, $20 admission up to four people. Sold only at the fairgrounds.
