Hillsborough schools to celebrate Digital Learning Day

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Hillsborough County students and educators will join others from all 50 states to celebrate Digital Learning Day on Wednesday, February 5th.

Hillsborough County Public Schools will enjoy a variety of events, including using ExploreLearning Gizmos in middle and high school classes.  ExploreLearning Gizmos is the world's largest library of online interactive simulations for math and science.

Elementary students will use National Geographic electronic resources and LEGO robotics.

The annual celebration of Digital Learning Day comes as President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced $750 million in commitments from U.S. companies to begin wiring more classrooms with high-speed Internet.

Apple is pledging $100 million in iPads, computers and other tools. AT&T and Sprint are contributing free Internet service through their wireless networks. Verizon is pitching in up to $100 million in cash and in-kind contributions.  Microsoft is making its Windows software available at discounted prices, and offering 12 million free copies of Microsoft Office software.

"In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, we should definitely demand it in our schools," Obama said.

Hillsborough County Public Schools will also host the Kodu Cup, a competition for middle and high school students to create 3-D computer video games using Microsoft Kodu software.  The competition will take place at 10 a.m. at Bowers/Whitley Career Center in Tampa.
