LUTZ, FL (WFLA) - Technology played a major role in avoiding a tragedy early Sunday in Lutz.

An elderly Hillsborough County man went missing but was located within 15 minutes less than a quarter-mile from where he was last seen. John Morgan suffered cuts on his leg and head but is expected to be ok.

According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office report deputies were dispatched to a home in the 5400 block of Taylor Rd. just before 5 a.m. Morgan suffers from Alzheimer’s and is a client of SafetyNet by LoJack.

The device emits a tracking signal which led authorities to Morgan. Because of dense fog HCSO aviation was unable to assist in an area that is heavily wooded and contains several bodies of water.

Investigators say citizens enrolled in SafetyNet are fitted with a small personal transmitter. If a SafetyNet client goes missing their caregiver notifies the local LoJack agency and a trained crew responds to the scene.

Morgan was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment and evaluation.
