MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -

The funeral for Wayne County Sheriff Carey A. Winders was held Friday afternoon.

Winders became sheriff in 1994. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home last Friday morning.

During his service speakers noted that Winders was known for wearing cowboy boots. His trademark hat was on display.

Maj. Fane Greenfield talked about the personal side of Winders.

"Not only was he our boss, but a loving friend that had a heart of gold," Greenfield said.

Over his 20 years in office, many people learned he loved Rock ‘N Roll music, as evidenced by the playing of Eric Clapton's "Knocking on Heaven's Door." Winders also had a lighter side explained pastor Dr. Richard Glosson.

"Sometimes he would go in there and he'd be pulling pranks," Glosson said.

Of course, Winders's role as sheriff couldn't be ignored. He helped move his office into the digital age and he won several grants that paid for better crime-fighting and safety equipment.

"He took the Wayne County Sheriff's Department to a new level in the 20 years that he was sheriff," Glosson said. "As far as I'm concerned Sheriff's Winders can never be replaced...."

Winders is survived by his wife, three daughters, and two grandchildren along with extended family members.

The sheriff's office said in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Union Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church at 1283 Union Grove Church Road, in Fremont or to the Wounded Warrior Projects located at 4200 Morganton Road, Suite 300, in Fayetteville.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said Maj. Fane Greenfield will serve as sheriff until the County Commissioners appoint some to fulfill the rest of Winders term.
