BBB warns of "one ring scam"

Posted: Updated:
Next time someone calls you from an unknown number, or an area code you don't recognize, the Better Business Bureau warns, don't answer. The "one ring scam" is popping up on cell phones around the country.

If you're a target, your phone only rings once or twice, and the scammer doesn't leave a voicemail. If you call back you could get charged.

According to a warning from the BBB, victims are billed not only for the international call if they call back, but also the unwanted “premium service,” which typically appears as a $19.95 charge. In some cases, scammers may only put a small charge so the victim doesn't get suspicious.

The BBB recommends not answering unknown numbers and not calling them back. If you think you've been a target for fraud, call your cell service provider. Also, check your bill carefully for small, irregular, charges.
