LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

A Polk County woman is finally getting the crown she deserves.

Virginia Cooke will be the belle of the VISTE ball Saturday night in Lakeland. VISTE stands for Volunteers In Service to The Elderly.

Cooke earned the honor of queen after volunteering several hours a week for 13 years. She helps elderly neighbors, so they can live independently.

Cooke said the satisfaction she gets out of volunteering is reward enough, but she always wanted to wear a crown.

“We bag rice and we bag candy. We do paper products. We do a little bit of everything and it’s a nice place to volunteer,” Cooke said of her weekly routine.

The VISTE Ball will be held in the hangar at Tiger Town in Lakeland at 6 p.m. on Saturday. It is the organization’s signature fundraiser that supports independent living for seniors.
