ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

The painstaking task of going over the house shared by murder victims Paula Witthaus and Jim Rapp is moved into its second night. Two St. Petersburg forensic vans were parked in the driveway.

Friends of murder victim, Paula Witthaus, say she pushed for several causes like helping the homeless, domestic partners, and a food bank called Mercy Keepers.

"When she was speaking to city leaders she came from the heart and didn't talk down to them, didn't talk up to them," said Chuck Terzian.

Chuck Terzian says Witthaus was a fighter who beat cancer twice, even going to hospice at one point. A YouTube video also shows her protesting a loud generator placed outside her former house.

Neighbors remember victim, Jim Rapp, as a friendly older man, who liked to talk.

"He couldn't have hurt anyone. He couldn't have fought back. At all," said Janice Carter.

The double murder has many on edge.

"It kind of makes me wonder, is it a freak around the street and I've got to keep my doors locked and stay armed at all times," said Sherry Hansen.

Police say a man who did odd jobs for the couple discovered their bodies on Wednesday afternoon, but they may have died on Monday.

Chuck Terzian says Paula Witthaus' death is hard to take.

"She just is such a bright light, the world shines a little less brighter now without her in it," he said.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
