RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory urged North Carolinians to be safe and careful as the state continues to dig out of a heavy snowstorm that swept across the South Tuesday.

Two people were killed in accidents related to the storm in Surry County, and McCrory said he was "heart-broken by this loss of life."

"I just want to encourage everyone to continue to be safe. We do not want any more fatalities," McCrory said.

He said he took his usual walk to work Wednesday morning "and I about busted my rear end."

The problem across the state, McCrory said, is ice.

"We had a lot more black ice than anticipated when frankly we could have used a little bit more snow," McCrory said. "But we've adapted."

Tony Tata, secretary of the Department of Transportation, said DOT had 2,500 employees on the roads, with 1,300 trucks and 170 graders involved.

Tata said the DOT has been focusing on primary roads and hopes to have those clear by Wednesday afternoon. After that, he said, the DOT will look to secondary roads. He said that will take 24 to 36 hours to clear.

Also, Tata said, all the ferry routes have been suspended.

Mike Sprayberry, the director of the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management, said North Carolina has helped by the fact that many schools were closed "really helped us avoid some issues you might be seeing in other states."

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has received 600 calls for service related to the storm.
