Hernando deputy charged with battery on woman

Posted: Updated:
HERNANDO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - A Hernando County Sheriff's deputy has been charged with battery on a woman who he gave a ride home to from an accident that he responded to.

HCSO spokeswoman Denise Moloney says Patrol Deputy William Martinez was served a warrant for his arrest on charges of battery and false imprisonment on Monday evening.

Maloney says Deputy Martinez was backing up a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper at the scene of an accident investigation near the intersection of Deltona Boulevard and Founder Road at about 2:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Witnesses say that after the trooper completed his investigation Deputy Martinez gave a driver involved in the accident a ride home.

Maloney said that the driver came to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office on Friday where she told authorities that during the ride home Deputy Martinez participated in inappropriate conduct and contact with her.

Officials say Deputy Martinez initially denied doing anything wrong, but the victim brought evidence that was sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for testing on Friday.

Maloney says the results of the testing came back on Monday and showed that Deputy Martinez was untruthful about the encounter.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis terminated Deputy Martinez on Monday for recent immoral conduct and for not giving truthful testimony when questioned about it.

Authorities say the criminal investigation; including interaction with the State Attorney's Office resulted in a warrant for Deputy Martinez's arrest and was executed shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

A sudden lurch in a creeping landslide in the northwest Wyoming resort town of Jackson split a house in two and forced workers to abandon efforts to stabilize the hillside.
No one can say precisely when the mountainside collapsing into this Wyoming resort town will give way. But it appears increasingly likely that when it does, it's going to take a piece of Jackson with it.
