Lakeland Police Chief Lisa Womack has resigned.

Lakeland City Manager Doug Thomas made the announcement Friday afternoon saying Womack will lead the department for the next three months while a search for her replacement is made.

"Over the past year, Chief Womack has had to oversee numerous workplace misconduct investigations and criticisms from departmental operations that, in many cases, predated her tenure with the city," said Thomas.

"During that time, she has consistently and professionally handled the criticisms and consistently implemented improvement for the betterment of the Lakeland Police Department, " he added.

Womack’s resignation followed a series of high-profile problems, including sex scandals to a recent report that said the police department has a long-standing policy of not following public record laws.

A total of 30 LPD employees have been disciplined and a few have resigned.

Thomas said that Womack made the decision to resign on her own.

Her decision came two days after LPD union members cast a non-binding confidence vote, with 80 members voting for confidence and 80 for no confidence in their chief.

Womack's last day on the job will be April 30.

The no confidence vote didn't require any action from the city or department, but allowed officers to voice their opinions.
