HERNANDO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

A Pinellas Park Vietnamese market does a good business serving people in the community with specialty items they can't get anywhere else.

But, a member of the family that owns it says, strong sewage smells coming from Reliable Septic and Sewage, across the street, keep customers away.

"Sometimes when it's a strong wind, we'll get it more frequently. You can smell it all through the parking lot. It comes in the store a little bit," said Carlos Gonzalez. He says he sometimes has to hold his breath.

Reliable is a long-time neighbor. It's been in the area since 1983. Mike and Dani Albert bought it from his father four years ago.

Several months ago, complaints about odors prompted them to change where they process fat, oil, grease and sewage. Dani Albert says they've cleaned up their operation. "We've taken, everything is indoors. There's not a tank outside, not in ground. Not above ground," she said.

The Alberts say, smells are contained inside the building.

People who work nearby say that's partially true.

"Somewhat, during the day. hen we're here. At night time, no.Some people work late at night here and they still smell it," said Andrew Howley, who works at a golf cart repair shop.

The owner of the building where the businesses are located has been fighting Reliable for years. He said the odor is terrible.

"That constant strong sewage smell. It's been consistent and we've been telling the county and the governor, and the state senator, 'Can you guys please do something?'," he said.

Several neighbors just downwind from Reliable Septic and Sewer say that while the smell in this area used to be horrible, in recent months it's gotten much better.

Pinellas County filed suit against the company for running a fat, oil and grease operation without a proper permit. The status of that suit is unknown.

The Alberts say they've spent thousands of dollars to modify their process to reduce smells.

"I just think that you can't please everyone all the time," said Dani Albert.
