TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The Pasco deputy who suffered two broken legs and a broken arm in a hit and run crash on New Year's Day has been released from the hospital.

"I'm feeling great and I'm just excited to be heading home; get some normalcy back in my life," said Deputy Darren Hill.

The 29-year-old left Tampa General Hospital in a wheelchair Wednesday afternoon, three weeks after a head-on hit and run left him severely injured.

It was New Year's Day around 4:22 a.m.

"Thank God he is alive," said Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco that morning. "If you saw pictures of the crash it's horrific."

Deputies say Bertin Jaimes crossed the center line on State Route 54 near Loury Dr. and it Hill's cruiser. Jaimes, 25 of 5230 4th St. Zephyrhills, is charged with felony leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury, driving with an expired license, and driving left of center.

"I don't recall anything but the hospital," Hill remembers about that morning. "First thing I remember is waking up in the ER with the doctors pulling on my leg. At that point, it took a while before anyone told me anything, but they told me I would walk again, so that was very encouraging."

Hill, who has a master's degree in game design, says the first thing he wants to do after being in the hospital for three weeks is go home and play video games with his brothers. He is determined to get stronger and eventually return to work.

Hill says the fact that he is still here is incredible in itself.

"Absolutely... it's a New Year's miracle," he said, and smiled.
