TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) -

Members of the Tarpon Spring Police Department dive team say there was no one inside a car that was reported submerged in a canal Tuesday morning.

Police got the call about a car in a canal near 300 Pampas Ave. around 8:14 a.m.

No one saw the car go into the water, according to Tarpon Springs Police Capt. Jeffrey Young.

Young says the car, a 2011 4-door silver Kia, matches the description of a vehicle that was reported stolen from a residence in Palm Harbor on Tuesday morning.

"It was a deliberate act to put it in the water," said Young.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the stolen vehicle case.
