MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Manatee County Animal Services has suspended all dog adoptions for the entire week at its Palmetto shelter.

This is in response to a small outbreak of the parvovirus.

Three dogs had to be euthanized because of the disease and county workers want to stop the virus from spreading.

When you walk through Manatee County Animal Services in Palmetto, the walkways are strangely empty, but the loud barking shows there's plenty of activity still going on.

For now, all the dogs here call this shelter home, and for now, it'll have to stay that away. No dogs are allowed to be adopted.

"We don't want the dogs to have interaction with the grounds or other dogs or people if we can help it," said Manatee County Animal Services Division Chief Kris Weiskopf.

Last weekend, three dogs came down with the dangerous and highly contagious parvovirus. Dr. Luke Berglund says the disease attacks the dog's intestines and is spread through the feces.

"Probably starting out with just some lethargy, and then vomiting, diarrhea, those are probably the ones. Profuse diarrhea would be the biggest symptom for sure," he said, adding that the disease is deadly.

It's rare for the parvovirus to appear during the winter, and after these three dogs showed signs of the disease, they had to be euthanized.

"We don't have isolation areas. It's expensive, veterinary costs are anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 because it requires intensive care," said Weiskopf.

Weiskopf said other animal caretakers were unable to care for the sick animals, so euthanasia was the only option.

Now the task turns to ensuring the parvovirus doesn't spread. All of the kennels were scrubbed from top to bottom, foot baths were placed throughout the building, dog walkers were turned away, the animal photography sessions were canceled and adoptions were suspended.

"You don't want to spread that contagious disease everywhere- on the grounds or with other animals," said Weiskopf.

So far, no more cases of the parvovirus have reappeared. The shelter anticipates that normal business operations can resume on Saturday, meaning by that day, the dogs can be adopted again.

The suspension on adoptions only applies to dogs at the Palmetto shelter. That means cats can still be adopted there, and all adoptions are going on as usual over at the downtown Bradenton facility.

Veterinarians say the best thing you can do to prevent your dog from catching the parvovirus is to make sure it's vaccinated.

Manatee County Animal Services operates two shelters that have cats and dogs available for adoption-
