WASHINGTON, DC (WFLA) - U.S. Senator Bill Nelson says federal labor officials are coming to Florida by the end of the week to help fix problems plaguing the new online benefits system.

“The secretary of labor has assured me his key staff that handle unemployment insurance will be in Tallahassee by the end of the week; and, they'll stay there until the problems are fixed,” U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) said in a statement Tuesday night.

The state switched over to the $63 million system in October. Since then, there have been continued complaints about unemployed Floridians frustrated at their ability to process claims.

Many people have contacted 8 On Your Side, complaining of problems and glitches that are preventing them from getting their benefits.  Some have gone weeks without a payment.

The state has been fining Deloitte Consulting $15,000 a day since Dec. 23 and has withheld a $3 million payment. State officials say they will continue to assess the fines until the system is "fully functional."

A press release from Nelson's office says he believes U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez will have a progress report early next week.
